Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) Program

Huntsville Engineering and Support Center (formerly Huntsville Division) was formed in 1967 to support the design and construction of Anti-Ballistic Missile facilities for the SAFEGUARD Program.  Over the years the Center has continued to provide engineering support for BMD related activities.

On April 30, 1998, the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) selected Boeing North America as BMDO National Missile Defense Joint Program Office's (NMD JPO) prime contractor for the responsibilities as the Lead System Integrator (LSI).  Boeing's proposal included "Partnering" with the USACE for the design and construction of facilities to support the deployment of an NMD system.

On December 15, 1998, an official charter was signed by Major General Milton Hunter, USACE, and Major General Willie B. Nance, NMD Program Manager establishing the USACE as a full partner in the development of the NMD Program.  The U.S. Army Engineering and Support Center will serve as the "one door to the Corps," maintaining the responsibility for program management for all the Corps support throughout the life of the program.

To meet the program requirements for the NMD program, CEHNC works in close coordination with the National Missile Defense Joint Program Office, Lead System Integrator, and other organizations to complete facilities designs and studies.
